“I’m from the old school, household smell like soul food…Curried falafel, barbecued tofu…” Dead Prez

Now that I’ve got your attention with a little Dead Prez….I am back with interview number 2! While I was talking to my bro Darius and telling him about some of my plans for the blog, it was brought to my attention that the good brother Purnell (who along side Darius started the Christoper Jordan Clothing Company) had switched to  the vegan lifestyle a few years back. So Darius suggested I reach out to him for an interview. It made sense to me because I’d get to learn something new and catch up with a friend who made a major lifestyle change.

So today I have the bro Purnell Lindsay, Co-Owner of Christopher Jordan Clothing Company and Buffalo Native. Sharing a little bit on what made him decide to become a Vegan, some of its benefits and some typical meals.

1. So, first off what made you become a Vegan? And how long have you been on this journey?

I decided to become vegan due to a lot of pre-existing health conditions within my family’s history. I also wanted to try eating more healthy as I grew older. I’ve been vegan since Apirl 2017.

2. For those that do not know, Can you explain a little bit of the difference between a vegetarian and a vegan?

Vegetarians still consume dairy and other products that come from animals. Whereas a vegan will only consume plant based foods. Instead of drinking regular milk from a cow, I will have almond milk. But preferably coconut milk because it has a more creamy consistency for me.

3. What health benefits have you noticed since becoming a vegan?

I have a lot more energy throughout my day and my blood pressure is back to normal! I’ve also noticed that my body recovers quicker after a workout.

4. Where do you get most of your protein and other supplements that you would normally only get from meat?

I usually get my protein from chia seeds, beans, pumpkin seeds and a variety of tree nuts.

5. Is it expensive to maintain a vegan lifestyle?

No, not in my opinion.

6. Whats the most important thing you tell someone that is considering becoming vegan?

I would tell them to make sure they are consistently getting their vitals checked from blood tests, to make sure they are not lacking vitamins. Which is very important.

7. So taking it back to the food side as we get ready to conclude this interview, Can you run us through a typical day food wise for yourself? What would breakfast, lunch & dinner look like for you?

I consume a lot of raw foods throughout the day. For breakfast I usually drink a smoothie that includes beets, cherries, bananas, blueberries, coconut milk and chia seeds. After about 2 hours, I usually eat an apple or a piece of fruit with a handful of macadamia nuts.

For lunch, I usually eat a pita wrap that contains hummus, kalamata olives, red onions, spinach, green peppers and Viola Life’s Vegan Feta with Greek dressing which has no diary. I also consume water with my lunch.

Dinner is usually a poke bowl, that contains a bed of fresh greens, and quinoa.

8. Finally, What has been your favorite vegan meal so far?

Curry Chickpeas with Coconut Rice, and Purple & Green Cabbage.

I want to shoutout and thank my brother Purnell for taking time to do this interview, and helping spread some positive information about Veganism. I will be honest, I’ve cracked so many vegan jokes (and will continue to lol) but I see that it does have many benefits. It also is not too far off from things I’ve been told by trainers in the past. At the end of the day its about making the best choice to ensure you live a full and healthy life.
